Why Honeymoon in Lovina?

A place called Lovina must be a great honeymoon destination, right? With its spectacular waterfalls and amazing marine life (swim with dolphins!), Lovina on the north shore of Bali is perfect for couples wanting to have a calm and romantic stay away from the crowds of South Bali.

Explore Lovina

Lovina is a calm coastal area located on the northern shores of Bali. It contains a series of small villages about 5km west of the city of Singaraja. Even though Lovina is located on one of the world’s most popular islands, it still manages to remain quiet and untouched. It’s a place where you can experience the traditional Bali life.

Unlike the southern parts of Bali, Lovina isn’t your usual type of bustling tourist city. However, there are still a lot of fun and romantic activities you and your significant other could indulge in. Lovina is a prime location for snorkeling, dolphin watching and a chance to see truly fantastic waterfall wonders.

We would personally recommend you to stay two nights in Lovina. Wake up early during your first day for dolphin watching (boats leave at 6AM!), and spend the afternoon at the waterfalls. At night you can explore other aspects of Lovina, including the local restaurants. For shopping you could visit Singaraja, the main city of North Bali, which is around 15 minutes drive from Lovina.

Dolphin Watching

Dolphin watching can be a truly romantic and immersive experience. Just picture you and your partner on a boat (or swimming beside the boat!), on the ocean with wild dolphins swimming all around you!

Dolphin watching in Lovina starts at 6AM in the morning. We therefore suggest you lodge in a hotel the night before and arrange your dolphin watching experience in advance.

Waterfalls

The hills inland from Lovina are primarily known for having truly stunning waterfalls that will leave you in awe. While there are many waterfalls to choose from, the following three are our favorites:

  • Aling Aling Waterfalls: The most fun one! This is a great place to visit, especially if you’re the type that loves adventures and picturesque locations. It is originally a jungle ravine with two giant waterfalls, three smaller waterfalls and natural pools and water slides. It is perfect for cliff jumping and relaxing.
  • Sekumpul Waterfalls: The most spectacular one! Off the beaten path. You can hear the roar of this 80 meter high waterfall from far in the distance. Bound to take your breath away and leave you with a deeper appreciation for nature.
  • GitGit Waterfall: The best for swimming! This long waterfall is surrounded by foliage and natural swimming pools. It is accessible by a rocky walking trail and is stunning in its beauty. These waterfalls can be accessible by a car or taxi. It is not within walking distance, but the views make the stress and efforts worthwhile.

Day Trip to Lovina

While we wish your honeymoon would last forever, reality probably means your time in Bali is limited. If you are staying in South Bali (Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud), an efficient way of experiencing Lovina is by booking a day tour to North Bali. This is a great way to see the dolphins, explore the waterfalls and even see the famous Ulun Danu Beratan Temple on Beratan Lake. All in one day!

Do expect to leave very early in the morning to make it in time for the early morning dolphin watching. However as the drive up to Lovina takes around 2.5 hours, you might continue sleeping in the car.

Honeymoon Hotels in Lovina

If you do plan to stay overnight in Lovina, here are some great accommodations options. You can either stay at the beach or in the green hills (a bit more inland) with amazing views over the area.

Although hotels in Lovina are not as fancy as some you would find in South Bali, they still have a charming quaintness, good ambience and great food and views. These are our favorites:

How to get to Lovina

Lovina is not close to Bali’s airport. That is exactly how it has managed to be less touched by mass tourism. It is around 3 hours drive from Denpasar airport or South Bali.

Finding a taxi at the airport that will take you all the way to Lovina is usually challenging, stressful and expensive. You can book a ride from a reputable and safe company to save yourself from all that stress.

If you’re not in a hurry, you could make some stops along the way and explore the lakes and the Ulun Dana Temple. But make sure you agree on such stop with your driver in advance!
