Bamboo cabins: unique architecture inspired by Balinese tradition
Hidden among Bali’s green hills and rice fields, bamboo cabins offer a peaceful and natural place to stay — especially for couples. It’s really unique to Bali! We have tried many of these unique hidden getaways ourselves and love them.
Bamboo grows quickly in Bali and has been used in local homes and temples for generations. Today, this traditional material is the base for beautiful bamboo villas, wooden cabins, and even treehouses that blend comfort with nature.
These unique stays often feature spectacular architecture with open-air spaces, curved designs, and amazing jungle or rice field views. Many are built as part of eco retreats, showing how sustainable travel can also be stylish and romantic.
Most of these places are located off the beaten path, in quieter areas like Tabanan, Sidemen, a bit further away from the town of Ubud, or near the eastern coast of Candidasa. This makes them ideal for a peaceful romantic getaway or even a honeymoon glamping experience.
Prices vary, but many are affordable thanks to their remote locations. A few of the more Instagrammable options may cost a bit more, but still offer good value for a unique experience.
Our favorite bamboo villas and treehouses
Most of these are bamboo - but we’ve added some spectacular stays in the list below that might use other types of wood too!

1. Veluvana (Sidemen)
Sidemen townLove it? Check prices now!
5 spectacular bamboo houses overlooking the Sidemen valley. This is a great option for couples on a honeymoon. You can have a romantic candle light dinner in your cabin, as well as enjoy a flower pool or floating breakfast together. The architecture of each house is unique, all inspired by the shapes of different animals: from manta rays to a cobra. All houses are made with environmental-friendly materials, even the furniture is bamboo! The price of a night here is quite steep, and they often get booked well in advance. However we still believe its a great addition for a short stay. We like that it is in quite a lively location with some other restaurants in walking distance, so it is not super remote.

2. Bamboo Turtles Eco Lodge (near Ubud)
20m south of UbudLove it? Check prices now!
A more affordable and highly rated option quite close to Ubud. While Bamboo Turtles Ecolodge is located on the busier south side of Ubud, it is tucked away in a beautiful spot on a green river bank. The mini resort offers 5 different cabins. While these don't have private pools like some more luxury wooden cabins in Bali, there is a nice public pool to enjoy. The staff is super friendly.
Check Availability
Food is offered on-site, but is pretty basic. There's a Balinese village in walking distance, which offers some local restaurants. It takes around 20 minutes to get to Ubud without traffic, but it is important to note that the road from South Bali to Ubud does get congested at times, so it might take longer.♥Check Availability

3. Camaya Bali (Sidemen)
Remote, north of SidemenLove it? Check prices now!
Located a short drive north of Sidemen in north-east Bali, this spot is quite remote and definitely off the beaten path. Six cabins are part of this boutique resort, which is extremely highly rated. Guests are however warned they might encounter insects and reptiles, as that is part of the jungle. No air-conditioning is offered, but the region is a bit elevated so it is cooler than in most of Bali.

Guests that book via the link below will get a scooter included in their stay, which is useful to get around in this remote area. However if you don't feel comfortable driving a motorbike, multiple activities are offered by the Camaya, including rafting and a visit to a nearby waterfall. The on-site restaurant serves home-made Balinese dishes, which can be ordered to your room as well.♥Check Availability

4. Bambu Indah (Ubud)
Sayan, west of UbudLove it? Check prices now!
Bambu Indah is our favorite ecologically mindful resort in the Ubud area. Founded by the couple that also runs Bali's famous Green School, Bambu Indah is designed so that guests can experience nature up close. Walking around this resort is an adventure in itself, with unique walkways along the Ayung river as well as bamboo bridges spanning across, a unique wooden elevator down into a cave and 15 natural spring-fed pools. However with only 23 bamboo rooms, this is still a boutique hotel. We love having a cocktail during sunset from the Elevator bar.

Bambu Indah considers itself as an experiment in regenerative hospitality, by not just preserving nature, but building it back. Most structures are built with replenishable bamboo. The resort grows their own rice and vegetables. Plastics, cement and chemicals are avoided alltogether. The pools are supplied by water from underground aquifers and are filtered naturally by Bali's volcanic rock. Wastewater is used for irrigation of the gardens and rice fields. Finally, recognizing that Bali's nights can be hot, rooms do offer air conditioning, but in a way that just the bed area is cooled, minimizing energy usage.♥Check Availability

5. Bambootel Sawa View (north of Ubud)
Tampaksiring, 20 min north of UbudLove it? Check prices now!
Bambootel Sawah View is located near Tampaksiring. While that might not ring a bell directly, its a town roughly 20 minutes north of Ubud which is known for the famous Tirta Empul temple and the nearby Tegellalang Rice Fields. A great region with a lot to see. The boutique resort is adult only, making it very suitable for couples.

Bambootel is a high end option, the cabins are even branded as "Villas"! While not cheap, you get what you pay for. While this is a boutique resort, they have an onsite spa, restaurant and even gym. Unfortunately the villas do get booked far in advance, so definitely check availability well in advance of your trip.♥Check Availability

6. Roots Tree House (Uluwatu)
Between Uluwatu and Nusa DuaLove it? Check prices now!
Most tree houses are located in central or north Bali, often in remote locations. Roots is different, it is located between Uluwatu and Nusa Dua in South Bali, not far from the famous beach clubs of Melasti beach. A very unique stay for a region that is mostly known for large high-end resorts.

We love that these are actually tree houses, all uniquely designed around a tree that was already there. There is a town in walking distance, with some simple food options, but both Uluwatu and Nusa Dua are close enough to visit for dinner.♥Check Availability

7. Suenyo Eco Retreat (30min from Canggu)
Jungle 20 mins from CangguLove it? Check prices now!
Located in a secluded in a jungle river valley, but still only 20 minutes drive from Canggu. That is the promise of the 5-star boutique Suenyo Eco Retreat. Read our full review, as we were able to stay in one of their 5 spectacular private bamboo "Paviljons" with private pool and bathtub overlooking a jungle river. Our Pavilion featured spectacular bamboo architecture, unobstructed jungle river views, a private infinity pool and riverside bathtub.
There are many positive things to say about this place. We recommend trying the food here, while its a very small resort (5 rooms only) they clearly spent a lot of effort on perfecting their menu with unique twists on traditional Indonesian dishes. You can have a Balinese massage as a couple at a calm spot next to the river. And if you get bored, Canggu and Tanah Lot are only a short drive away (you do have to climb a bunch of stairs out of the valley to get back to the reception though!).

8. Gumi Ayu (Munduk)
MundukLove it? Check prices now!
The mountain region of Munduk is known (but not by many!) for its lakes, large cascading waterfalls and spectacular views over North Bali. As its a 3-hour drive from the airport, you won't find that many tourists here. With only 7 rooms, Gumi Ayu is small. They do have an affordably priced restaurant and spa on premise.
Check Availability
As the spot is quite remote, if you don't have your own transport it might be a bit hard to get around. Fortunately some activities are organized by Gumi Ayu, including some hikes to waterfalls or through the jungle. We really recommend couples to do a sunrise tour on the twin lakes. If you want to rise early, it is also possible to go to the North Bali coastal town of Lovina for a Dolphin Watching tour.♥Check Availability

9. Grun Tree House (Ubud town)
Ubud townLove it? Check prices now!
Can't choose between staying in a bustling town or a cabin in nature? Grun Treehouse might be your solution, as it is located in a great spot in Ubud town, close to the Tjampuhan bridge and in walking distance of the streets with restaurants and shopping. While technically not build around a tree, all tree houses are built with natural materials, feature luxury furnishing with attention to detail and have air conditioning. There are not so many facilities on-site, but you can find everything you need in Ubud.

The cabins are not as tucked away and remote as some of the other options, and while you will see other buildings you still have nice views overlooking some rice fields. Some of the studio's have a kitchen, which might be useful for health-conscious couples that prefer to prepare their own food.♥Check Availability

10. Munduk Cabins (Munduk)
MundukLove it? Check prices now!
While not exactly bamboo, still worth a mention. We stayed here to celebrate Olivia's birthday and loved it! This is a a perfect place to relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air. The region of Munduk is much cooler than most of Bali, as it is at high altitude.
Check Availability
Luxurious cabins offer breathtaking nature views over mountains and jungle all the way to the Java Sea. At night the sky lights up and the stars are so visible here they look like a city.
Don't miss out on the bonfire! With only 6 cabins (some with jacuzzi!), Munduk cabin is the best luxury sanctuary you'll find in central Bali. The staff is super friendly and the on-site Ulekan restaurant is known as the best restaurant in the region.♥Check Availability
